Reply speed

How fast to reply to Google reviews

Aim for 24–48 hours. Here is where that benchmark comes from, what happens if you reply a week later and how to answer a negative review quickly without mistakes.

How much time you have to reply

Reply to a Google review within 24–48 hours, and to a negative one on the same working day. Google sets no deadline and simply advises replying promptly, but customer expectations keep rising: in BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 19% of consumers expect a reply on the same day, 32% by the next day and 81% within a week. See the BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 (1,002 US consumers) and Google's tips on reviews.

What happens if you reply a week later

A reply after a week is better than silence, but it will barely help that customer. In a week they will have decided whether to come back, and other customers will see an unresolved complaint and a late reply date. A late reply to a negative review reads as a response to the publicity, not to the problem. Silence is worse: according to BrightLocal 2026, 42% of consumers are unlikely to use a business that never replies, and 80% are more likely to choose one that replies to all its reviews.

How to reply quickly to a negative review

Reply to a negative review on the same day and keep it short: acknowledge the problem and take the details to a private conversation.

  1. Thank the reviewer and name the problem in their words.
  2. Do not argue, and do not reveal personal data.
  3. Check the facts before explaining or promising compensation.
  4. Give a phone number or email address where the business can resolve it.
  5. Once the problem is solved, update the reply with one sentence.

How not to miss new reviews

To avoid missing reviews, turn on notifications in Google Business Profile and make one person responsible. Reviews are most often missed at weekends and during busy hours, so agree who replies then. If you have several locations, keep the reviews from all of them in one place.

How MapsReply shortens reply time

MapsReply cuts the path from review to reply down to a single approval: as soon as a new review appears, the service prepares a draft in your business's style. Replies to 4–5 star reviews can be published automatically, while 1–3 star reviews wait, by default, for your decision in your workspace or Telegram. How to automate replies safely.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to reply to a review within 24 hours?

No, Google sets no deadline. 24–48 hours is a practical benchmark that meets most customers' expectations; a negative review is best answered on the same working day.

Does reply speed affect my position in Google Maps?

Google does not name reply speed as a ranking factor. It recommends replying to reviews because it shows you value your customers; your position on Google Maps depends mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Google's explanation.

Why did my reply not appear straight away?

Google checks replies before publishing them: usually within 10 minutes, sometimes up to 30 days. If a reply is not approved, Google asks you to edit it. See Google's help.

Should I reply to old reviews?

Yes. A late reply is better than silence: the reviewer is notified, and future customers see that you respond to every review. Start with negative reviews and those where a helpful explanation would make a difference.

Will the customer know about my reply?

Yes, Google notifies the reviewer when you reply.

How can I reply quickly without sounding templated?

Write down your tone rules and a few examples, and add a detail from the review to every reply. According to BrightLocal 2026, templated replies put off half of consumers.
